North Shore Bank Sponsors Miniature Train At The Milwaukee County Zoo

Local preschoolers and kindergartners help dedicate new Safari Train Depot

MILWAUKEE, WI - The Milwaukee County Zoo is proud to announce North Shore Bank's sponsorship of the Zoo's legendary miniature train, which welcomes 500,000 riders annually.

"We are grateful to North Shore Bank for its commitment to the Zoo and its involvement in one of our best-loved attractions," said Zoo Director Charles Wikenhauser. "Visitors who enjoyed the Zoo train as children in the 1960s are now bringing their own children to experience the train 40 years later. It is a tradition that spans the decades."

The railroad at the Zoo opened in 1958, and was built by Knapp Railroad, which to this day does annual maintenance on the track. The train is equipped with a 1958 diesel, 1924 and 1916 steam engines, all built by Sandley Light Railway Equipment, Inc. located in the Wisconsin Dells. It continues to be one of the most popular attractions at the Zoo.

"North Shore Bank believes in giving back to the communities where it does business, and we're excited to have this opportunity to support one of metro Milwaukee's best-loved institutions - the Milwaukee County Zoo and its miniature train," said Stephen J. Steiner, senior vice president - Retail Banking, for North Shore Bank.

North Shore Bank's sponsorship was officially recognized during a public ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday, June 27, at the new Safari Train Depot. Kindergartners and preschoolers from St. Francis Children's Center in Glendale helped cut an animal-print ribbon and tooted train whistles to formally dedicate the new station, which features a larger, shaded cueing area and an access walkway over the train tracks to the Northwestern Mutual Family Farm. The children then hopped aboard the miniature train for the first ride from the new Depot.
